Quick and Easy Maxi Skirt

Hello All! I am always looking for a quick and easy project to work on because I don’t like to start a project that I can’t finish the same day. I also love projects that can be done in under 1 hour. This maxi skirt meets the requirements very well. The skirt has 1 seam in the back and an elastic waistband.  Both fabrics are ITY knit I found at Fine Fabrics in the remnant section. I have made several different versions of this skirt over the years and now I have decided to share the process with you. You can view the YouTube video here or check out the pictorial below:

Here are the tools you need:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape and Yard Stick
  • 3/4 Inch Elastic
  • Pins
  • 2 measurements: Waist – 1 Inch & Length + 2 Inches

Fold your fabric with right sides facing and selvage edges meeting

Take your length measurement and measure down your fabric using your measuring tape.

You can use your yard stick as a guide to cut your fabric. *Note: If you want a fuller skirt or you need more yardage cut 2 panels*

Once you cut your length, go ahead and cut off the selvage edge of your fabric

Pin down the length of your fabric and then take it to the sewing machine

Take your fabric to the ironing board and press your seam open and then at the top of your skirt, fold down 1 inch for your elastic casing and press

Once your 1 inch is for the elastic casing is pressed, take it to the sewing machine and sew around leaving a 1 inch opening to insert your elastic

Using your waist measurement, measure your elastic and use a safety pin to insert our elastic into the 1 inch opening (Be careful to not loose the other end of the elastic in the skirt)

Once the elastic is inserted, overlap and sew together using a zig zag stitch then sew up the opening you left in the waistband

Finally for the hem of your skirt, fold 1 inch (don’t forget to press) and take it to the sewing machine

Here is the finished skirt!

The Wonder Woman clutch is available in my online store under the custom multicolored clutch option. I made the shirt through the Mimi G Sew It Academy. Want to join the Sew-It Academy and learn how to make this shirt and much more click here.
