Final #BHMPatternDesigners Look

Hello All!

Today I want to share my make for the #BHMPatternDesigners challenge this year. If you don’t know what this challenge is, it is a challenge hosted by Nateida of @SewNaturaldane and Myra Lorraine @Onesewsweet. They hosted the challenge the first time last year and this is the 2nd annual challenge. Last year I was one of the sponsors and this year I am one of the ambassadors for the challenge. BHM stands for Black History Month and participants had to make a pattern by a black pattern designer. There were a list of black pattern designer and patterns, which included garments, knitting, and handbags. You can check out all of the information on their Instagram pages and YouTube channels, so if you did not participate this year, you can consider participating next year. *Post may contain affiliate links*

Here are the rules of the challenge:

  1. YOU MUST MUST MUST tag @onesewsweet and @sewnaturaldane AND use the #BHMPATTERNDESIGNERS in order to have your entry counted.
  2. You can ONLY SEW & POST your item (garments, handbag, knitting item, etc) between February 1st and February 29th. Your entry is due February 29th.
  3. You can ONLY use a Black Pattern Designer.

The theme for the challenge is who inspires you. I chose Amanda Seales for my inspiration because in my mind she is queen of the track suit! I decided to use the Lisa Loungewear pattern from StyleSewMe Patterns for my make. I love to be comfortable and this pattern is literally perfect for that. There are several different views and I decided to go with views A and B. There are also sew alongs for each one of her patterns.

Since I ordered the printed version of the pattern, I decided to trace the pattern instead of cutting it and I’m so glad that I did. At first, I traced a large for the top and an XL for the bottom. Well I made the top first in this black and white Ponte knit and it was a bit snug for my taste. Once I realized this, I retrace the pattern at an XL.

Before I cut the fabric for the pants, I took a hard look at the XL that I traced and quickly decided that it was going to be too small. I decided to play it safe and trace the XXXL size for the pants. I’m so glad I made that decision because the fit is spot on. I used a black knit fabric that I found at JoAnns Fabrics.

The final look for the top is the blue and black plaid Ponte knit from Fine Fabrics and the pants a black knit from JoAnn Fabrics. Overall, I’m pleased at the look of this outfit. I have to admit that having to cut the largest sizes on the pattern messed with my psyche a bit, but I do understand that pattern sizes are not the same as ready to wear sizes.

I highly recommend Style Sew Me Patterns because she has a variety of different patterns to choose from. Whatever your style is, I believe that she has a pattern for you. Most of her patterns are also beginner friendly and they also include step by step video tutorials on her YouTube channel.
