Mini Bucket Bag Pictorial

Hello All! Today I want to share a step by step pictorial on how to make a mini bucket bag. I love this bag because it is small and compact and also very easy to make. This bag would be a great date night accessory!  You can download the template for the mini bucket bag here Mini Bucket Bag Pattern and there is also a video tutorial showing how to make a larger version of the bag here. The size is different, but the construction is the same. Seam allowance is ½ inch unless otherwise stated. Print pattern at 100% or actual size.

Here are the tools you need for the mini bucket bag:

  • ½ yard exterior fabric
  • ½ yard lining
  • ½ fusible fleece
  • ½ woven interfacing
  • 6 grommets and grommet tools
  • Two ½ inch d-rings
  • Two ½ inch swivel clasp
  • Marking pen
  • Wonder clips or pens
  • Ruler
  • Coordinating thread
  • Scissors (Paper and Fabric)
  • 2 rivets and tools (optional)

Print the pattern and cut out the coordinating pieces for the exterior and lining fabrics. Fuse fusible fleece to the exterior pieces and woven interfacing to the lining pieces. For the adjustable strap:

  • Cut one 2” x 20” exterior fabric and woven interfacing for the strap
  • Cut two 2” x 2” exterior fabric and woven interfacing for the strap tabs
  • Cut one 2” x 25” exterior fabric and woven interfacing for the drawstring

Assemble the drawstring the same as the strap

Fold the exterior piece with right sides facing, pin (or clip) and sew down each side

Pin or clip the bottom corners of the bag then sew

Fold the lining piece with right sides facing and pin each side but leave a 3 to 4 inch opening on one side

Pin the bottom corners of the lining and sew

Fold the strap tabs in half and press

Fold each side of the strap tab to the center crease then press

Fold each side together and press

Sew down both sides

Place each strap tab on the d rings and baste in place

Turn the exterior bag to the right side, place the strap tabs on each side of the exterior, and baste in place

Place the exterior bag inside of the lining with right sides facing

Pin or clip around the top edge of the bag

Sew around the top edge and trim the seam allowance down to ¼ inch

Turn the bag to the right side using the opening you left in the side of the lining

Pin and sew the opening that was left in the lining

Place the lining on the inside of the bag and top stitch around the edge

Mark the placement of your grommets. 4 on each side about 1.5” apart.

Punch holes at each mark

Add grommets to the bag using hand tools or press machine

Take the drawstring and add place it through each grommet

For the strap

Fold the strap in half and press and fold each side of the strap to the middle crease and press (See strap tab steps)

Fold strap in half and press

Sew down each side

Add the swivel clasps on each end of the strap, fold over and sew in place

Add strap to the bag

You’re all done!
